How My Parents Shaped My Philanthropic Journey

I’ve always believed in the power of giving back, but my approach to charity is a bit different from the norm. I’m not out there on the front lines, volunteering physically. Instead, I’ve found my way to contribute — through financial donations to trusts that do the groundwork.

Sometimes, I can’t help but feel a bit hollow about it. I often wonder if just writing checks is enough, or if I could be doing more. It’s like having a garden that you never get to tend with your own hands. You water it through a hose, but never really touch the soil.

But then, I receive updates and photos showing how my contributions are making a real impact. These little glimpses into the lives I’m helping change do bring me some comfort. It’s heartening to see that even from a distance, I’m making a difference. This year, I donated 120k (to a single charity), which is way more than I ever thought I’d be able to give. Could I do more? Maybe.

I began this journey as an undergrad, starting small and gradually increasing my contributions. Now, in my 20s, I sometimes think I shouldn’t be doing this at my age.

But if everyone in my generation thinks like that, who will step up? There is a beautiful saying in Marathi that the doctor from a charity I donated to told my mother.
