This body positivity bs has gone way too far. [As a medic]
Growing up with my own weight challenges has provided me with firsthand experience of the health implications tied to our appearance. My early years were marked by being significantly overweight, a phase that transitioned into being underweight during my teens. This journey wasn’t just about the numbers on the scale but about the underlying health issues that accompanied each phase.
Example 1: The Pizza Paradox
During grad school, my diet was predominantly pizza — a staple at almost every school event. This wasn’t out of choice but necessity, given the financial constraints most students face. The result? A visceral aversion to pizza, yes, but more importantly, a realization of how poor dietary choices can impact health.
Despite appearing to be at a ‘normal’ weight, my health was far from optimal. Despite appearing healthier, I was far from it; running a mile was a monumental task. This period of my life serves as a stark reminder that what we consume in the name of convenience can have lasting effects on our health.
