Unmasking the Reality of a Cybersecurity Degree

When people hear ‘Cybersecurity,’ their minds wander into the mysterious realms of hacking, digital espionage, and clandestine operations — everything we’ve seen in those edge-of-the-seat movies. Who wouldn’t want to delve into the alluring intricacies of such a complex field, right? But here’s the thing: the term ‘hacker’ isn’t just a Hollywood stereotype. It’s a term often used (and misused) to conjure up images of keyboard ninjas. And, like any stereotype, it does the field little justice.

Flashback to 2018, when I was thrilled beyond measure to start my Master’s in Cybersecurity. Understand this: snagging a seat in this course was like trying to find a unicorn; not many schools offered it, and those that did had a very limited intake. So, when I got in, I felt like I’d snagged a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.
